Author: Janice Andersen
Getting into college is not easy to do. Each year thousands of students are turned down for admission because they have not prepared themselves for the competitive nature of college admission and because they have not academically prepared themselves to pass college entrance exams. If you have kids in junior high or high school then you need to start taking steps now to ensure that your child is ready to wow the admission boards of the colleges of their choice.
College Preparation Tutoring Programs Topic No. 1: Writing
Perhaps the most important skill that a tutor can help your child to develop is college level writing. Effective essay writing is going to be critical to not only your child’s ability to get into college, but it will also help them to perform better while in college. Writing tutors will need to focus on expository writings and essay writing. These skills will be tested during their college admission exams, such as the SATs and ACTs, and they will also be evaluated while their application is being considered.
College Preparation Tutoring Programs Topic No. 2: Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is another important skill that your child will need to develop to get into college and to perform well in high school and college. Reading comprehension skills will need to focus on strategies for absorbing large volumes of information over short periods of time. It will also need to focus on being able to identify important information and linking concepts.
College Preparation Tutoring Programs Topic No. 3: Math Skills
Math is another very important subject that your child will need to work on with a tutor. Math concepts based on algebraic and geometric theories will be key to passing college entrance examinations, as well as key to being able to understand Freshman college math courses.
College Preparation Tutoring Programs Topic No. 4: Foreign Language Skills
College preparation tutoring programs will also need to include a focus on foreign language skills. In order to be accepted into college level language majors, students generally need at least a basic understanding of a specific foreign language, and to be accepted into many colleges, they will need at least two years of foreign language.
College Preparation Tutoring Programs Topic No. 5: Test Taking Skills
The final topic that you will want to add to your college preparation tutoring program is test taking skills. You will want your child’s tutor to go over basic test preparation and test taking skills, as well as go over specific information and skills needed to take and pass college entrance exams.
Tutoring services can be enlisted to help prepare your child for college. When designing an effective tutoring program you will want to include math tutoring and language tutoring. |
