Matting and Framing Movie Poster Art Pieces

Author: Lee Dodds

Movie posters are really pieces of pop art. They can be quite elaborate and rich looking or simple and monochromatic. If you have a movie poster that you love, or a movie poster that you want to preserve and display then you need to learn how to mat and frame your movie poster. Follow these steps to create a work of art out of your movie poster.

Step No. 1: Select a Movie Poster to Work With

The first step is to select a movie poster that you want to display. You can select a movie poster that is based on one of your favorite films, or you can select a movie poster that has a theme or artistic style that you like. You can find these movie posters in department stores as well as online.

Step No. 2: Select Your Mats

The second step actually has two steps. First you will want to select how many mats you want, and then you will need to decide what colors to use. The first part will be to select if you want a single mat, a double mat or a triple mat. The number of mats that you use will depend on how much money you want to invest in your framing project and how complex the poster is. Generally I like to use a double mat.

Next you will want to select the colors for your mats. For dramatic matting effects select bold contrasting colors like black and white. For subtler effects select colors from the poster to build your matting.

Step No. 3: Select Your Frame

When selecting your frame you will need to look at several features. First you will want to select the type of material the frame is made from. Next you will want to look at the style of the frame. Finally you will want to select a color that complements your matting and your poster.

Step No. 4: Protecting Your Movie Poster Art

The final step in assembling your movie poster art piece is to decide if you want to enclose the framing or to leave it open. If you leave your framing project open then the poster will be exposed to dust, on the other hand, if you want to protect your movie poster art from dust damage and other hazards, then you will want to select either a plexiglass or glass pane insert. Plexiglass is your best option if ordering the framing material from a mail order company or if you plan on shipping the framed art work.
